The Content Creator's Accountant

Ralph Estep Jr. joins me to talk about one of the biggest challenges in podcasting: getting booked as a guest. We break down why so many podcast pitches fail and share real examples of outreach that completely misses the mark.

So Many Bad Pitches

As the host of Financially Confident Christian and Content Creators Accountant, Ralph has seen just about every type of pitch imaginable. He explains what podcast hosts are really looking for and why taking the time to personalize your message can make all the difference.

Ralph also shares the importance of researching a podcast before reaching out. A pitch that shows you understand the show's audience and explains why you're a good fit stands out far more than a generic email sent to hundreds of hosts.

Step One: Does the Show Do Interviews?

Ralph shares how the same people keep pitching a show that doesn't do interviews. This just proves (along with "I hope this finds you well") that the agencies pitching these guests have done zero investigation.

Want to Keep Your Money?

Beyond pitching, Ralph shares advice for content creators about managing their finances. He explains why it's important to have a plan for your money and how working with an accountant can help creators keep more of what they earn as their businesses grow.

If you want to become a better podcast guest, write pitches that get responses, and build your podcasting business more strategically, this episode is packed with practical, actionable advice.

Dave's Favorite CRM

If you're looking for CRM not so much to have funnels and track sales, but save information about your contact, and create a task list of follow ups, then check out (and this is the real name) Less Annoying CRM. It's $15/month per person. I love it.

Pitch Your Story

Speaker A

Today we have Ralph Estepp Jr. How.

Speaker B

To pitch a Podcast.

Speaker A

How to Pitch a podcast is where bad pitches get called out and better ones get made.

Speaker A

Real examples, real feedback, and smarter ways to get booked.

Speaker A

Find him@askralph.com how to pitch a podcast Ralph Estepp Jr. Is a guy that's been really in accounting since he was a little kid.

Speaker A

He's got four shows, Grit and Growth Business, Financially Confident Christian, the Truth Unveiled, and the Content Creators Accountant.

Speaker A

And that's the one I kind of identify Ralph with.

Speaker A

He's a guy, super nice guy, that really wants to see content creators keep the money they make.

Speaker A

It's hard enough to make it and he wants to make sure that you get to keep it.

Speaker A

You can find all of his shows over@askralph.com the first one I got was.

Speaker B

From somebody who is a founder and CEO of podcast booking and a YouTube growth expert.

Speaker B

And he started off by saying this.

Speaker B

Dear Ralph, and as soon as I read this, I hope this email finds you well.

Speaker B

Well, if you know anything about AI, you know that that isn't going to work.

Speaker B

But then he moves on.

Speaker B

His name is something Ahmed, and I specialize in arranging podcast appearance for exceptional guests.

Speaker B

Your podcast truly caught my attention.

Speaker B

I'm inspired by how you help listeners blend faith and practice to financial strategies.

Speaker B

Now I'll take apart.

Speaker B

I guess he's talking about my daily Financially Confident Christian show.

Speaker B

So clearly he's listened to it, but he hasn't paid that much attention to it because then he says, I'm reaching out on behalf of Chip Higgins, founder of Bizx and author of BizX Way.

Speaker B

He could share insights that resonate with your audience.

Speaker B

And he gave me several of those.

Speaker B

And you can learn more about Chip by going to Chip's Media Kit.

Speaker B

Would you be open to having him as a guest on the Financially Christian podcast?

Speaker B

Well, here's the problem with that, Dave.

Speaker B

I don't have guests on that show.

Speaker B

So for me, that was very odd.

Speaker B

It was cool that he looked it up.

Speaker B

Probably had an AI tool that checked it all out.

Speaker B

But then.

Speaker B

So then he waited about five days and then I got another one.

Speaker B

Hello, Ralph.

Speaker B

I hope you're doing well this way.

Speaker B

We changed it up a little bit.

Speaker B

It didn't find me.

Speaker B

Well, still telling me about how this guy Chip could help me.

Speaker A

Yes, of course.

Speaker A

The Just following up email.

Speaker B

Somebody then named Hannah Walters reaches out to me from.

Speaker B

I don't know where she's from, but hi, you.

Speaker B

Always great.

Speaker B

It's always great when the email Starts.

Speaker B

Hi, like I know this person.

Speaker B

We've got a group of nearly 50,000 podcast professionals.

Speaker B

We're wondering if you're currently looking for guests for your podcast.

Speaker B

We'd love to showcase you on our network and help you secure top notch guests.

Speaker B

Let me.

Speaker B

And now L e M M e. So I think the AI here is trying to be a little cutesy here.

Speaker B

Let me know if you're interested in joining.

Speaker B

Complimentary, of course.

Speaker B

Yeah, I don't think so, Hannah.

Speaker A

But wait, there's more.

Speaker A

And this is the stuff that drives us absolutely bonkers.

Speaker B

This one looks like it's exactly from the same person but a different email address.

Speaker B

This one came from Ivy Chandler.

Speaker B

But here's the deal.

Speaker B

Hey, not high to beginning the whole, but hey.

Speaker B

And all of a sudden this person's network is different.

Speaker B

They have a network of over 40,000 podcast professionals.

Speaker B

So the first one had 50,000, this one only has 40,000.

Speaker B

So this is probably going to get my attention, right?

Speaker B

And then they asked this.

Speaker B

We're wondering if you're currently seeking guests for your podcast.

Speaker B

Again, if they understood my podcast, it's a solo show.

Speaker B

We'd love to showcase you on our network and help you find high quality guests.

Speaker B

And Lemmy.

Speaker A

Oh, go.

Speaker B

Here we go again.

Speaker B

Lemme L e M M e. Clearly using the same tool, probably the same person if you're interested in joining.

Speaker B

Complimentary, of course.

Speaker B

A lot of complimentary stuff going on here.

Speaker B

Dave.

Speaker A

Yeah, this is the law of reciprocity.

Speaker A

We've done something nice for you, you should do something nice for us.

Speaker A

And I get Another one on January.

Speaker B

20Th again from Ivy Chandler.

Speaker B

And then Hannah Waters goes again, but this time now she jumps the gun a little bit and she says, are you still interested in joining our podcast network?

Speaker B

Why never express any interest in the first place.

Speaker B

And then she says at the bottom, send a.

Speaker B

Skip it.

Speaker B

If this doesn't align.

Speaker B

Can I just skip all of these?

Speaker B

This is brutal.

Speaker B

I could list 200 others because I get these almost on a daily basis now.

Speaker B

We talk about this on the podcasting morning chat as well.

Speaker B

Because here's the problem.

Speaker B

A lot of I'll call them newer podcast hosts, they get these emails and they instantly think, oh, I've arrived, somebody wants to be on my show.

Speaker B

But you've got to ask yourself the question, what are they bringing to your audience?

Speaker B

Because there are a bunch of these, I'll call them, guest hosting hustlers out there who are looking to get people on your show.

Speaker B

There is no value for them on your show.

Speaker B

They're just trying to get you in their network because they think they're going to build one by one.

Speaker A

Yeah, they get paid not to make great connections, but just to make connections.

Speaker A

So, Ralph, where can people find you again?

Speaker B

You can find all my work@askralph.com that's a s k r a l p h dot com.

Speaker B

I do a daily show called Financially Confident Christian.

Speaker B

I do two weekly shows, one of which is called Truth Unveil with Ralph.

Speaker B

That's a Christian sermon show.

Speaker B

And back in December, I launched the Content Creators Accountant Show.

Speaker B

All of these are audio and video.

Speaker B

Now you can also go check out Grit and Growth Business.

Speaker B

I haven't been putting much into that lately, but all of those are found@askralph.com but if you're specifically looking for somebody to help you with the money side of content creation, check me out at Content Creators accountant.com Dave, thank you for everything you do, my friend.

Speaker B

And I'll be talking to you again soon.

Speaker A

Thank you so much, Ralph.

Speaker A

I thought I'd throw in a quick little tip.

Speaker A

One of the tools that I use is, and this is its real name, Less Annoying CRM.

Speaker A

So if you just want to keep track of people and your conversations and such, this is a great tool.

Speaker A

And the thing I love about it, it's only $15 a month for unlimited contacts.

Speaker A

And, and while you can do things like funnels, it's really more about keeping information about people.

Speaker A

You can set up tasks to nudge you when it's time to reach back out to someone.

Speaker A

It's a really great customer relation management tool, hence CRM.

Speaker A

And I'll have links to that out in the show notes.

Speaker A

And of course, the next time you get a bad pitch, feel free to record that and go to pitchapodcast.com story and upload it there.

Speaker A

And.

Speaker A

And if you know someone who was like, oh man, these pitches say, yep, you're not alone.

Speaker A

Feel free to share that with them or share it with the person that just sent you yet another really bad podcast pitch.
