Jason Cercone Called Out a Fake Cross Promotion
Today we're going to hear about a classic blind pitch that Jason Cercone received, and this is just a classic "how not to pitch a podcast." Jason is looking to have a conversation with someone who will bring value to his audience.

Takeaways:
- Jason receives many cold, canned pitches that fail to reference my show or name, signaling mass outreach.
- When pitchers boast about their audience size without explaining the concrete value they will bring, Jason disregard their offers.
- He verify claims; when cross-promotion assertions lack evidence on the claimant's networks, he considers the pitch deceptive and invalid.
- We prefer conversational outreach that demonstrates understanding of our show and articulates specific topics aligned with our audience.
- Jason immediately disqualifies pitches that focus solely on self-promotion and use inbox bumps or AI-generated messages instead of personalized requests.

Pitch a podcast.com how to pitch a Podcast Hey, I'm Dave Jackson, founder of the school of Podcasting and head of podcasting@podpage.com and today we've got Jason.
Dave Jackson00:00:28
Wait till you hear.
Dave Jackson00:00:29
This is like just a supreme, like a classic, like a fine wine that you go, oh, yeah, sometimes it's.
Dave Jackson00:00:36
It's just great to go back to where it all started.
Dave Jackson00:00:41
The blind podcast pitch.
Dave Jackson00:00:42
Take it away, Jason.
Jason Cercone00:00:43
Hey, it's Jason Sercone from BombTrack Media.

Jason Cercone00:00:55
So I wanted to take some time today to share a story about a recent pitch that I got that was just, I guess, ridiculous would be a good way to say it.
Jason Cercone00:01:03
And I say that because I feel like I've seen so many pitches come to me this way.
Jason Cercone00:01:07
And it's getting to a point where I'm just questioning why the folks that are sending these pitches don't think that we understand how to verify information.
Jason Cercone00:01:16
The pitch in question was a gentleman that.
Jason Cercone00:01:20
First off, one of the biggest peeves that I have when it comes to pitching is when the pitcher does not mention my show or my name whatsoever, it immediately reeks of a cold canned pitch that probably went out to a thousand people worded the exact same way.
Jason Cercone00:01:39
So the line said, hey, loved your show, something to that effect.
Jason Cercone00:01:44
But what really just made me shake my head, and now this is something I've started doing as I see these pitches come across.
Jason Cercone00:01:52
I have 53,000 Twitter followers, I have 110,000 people on LinkedIn following me, and I'd be happy to cross promote your podcast.
Jason Cercone00:02:04
Guess what?
Jason Cercone00:02:04
I could give a damn about what audience you've built.
Jason Cercone00:02:09
If you haven't told me what kind of value you're going to bring to my podcast, it doesn't matter how many people you promote it to, because I have an audience that I want to serve and I want to make sure that your expertise is aligns with what they show up for.
Jason Cercone00:02:23
So whether you send it out to your audience or not is pretty much irrelevant.
Jason Cercone00:02:29
But what made me chuckle was when I went to see if he was telling the truth about what he would do, because he said he's been on lots of podcasts and talked about all of these great Things which, another thing, none of the things he wanted to talk about align with what I talk about on my podcast.
Jason Cercone00:02:45
But.
Jason Cercone00:02:46
But when I went to his two networks that he was bragging about, there was no mention of being on any podcast whatsoever.
Dave Jackson00:02:54
Oh, that's not one of our top answers.
Jason Cercone00:02:56
So, regarding cross promotion, he apparently has a totally different definition than I do.
Jason Cercone00:03:04
Overall, this pitch absolutely missed the mark.
Dave Jackson00:03:08
So we know what Jason's not looking for, what he's actually looking for right after this.
Dave Jackson00:03:14
How to pitch a podcast.
Dave Jackson00:03:48
So if you're pitching Jason from bombcast Media, here's what you should do.
Jason Cercone00:03:54
I look for people that are showing genuine interest, and to be completely honest, the best pitches that I get are the ones that simply start a conversation.
Jason Cercone00:04:04
A couple lines about the show.
Jason Cercone00:04:06
I. I'd rather talk with a person and get an understanding for who they are versus them trying to read off this laundry list of accolades that really hold no bearing on what I'm doing with my podcast.
Jason Cercone00:04:20
I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir as I tell this story, because I'm sure there are a number of hosts that experience this on a daily basis.
Jason Cercone00:04:28
And what's mind blowing is that we aren't getting any better.
Jason Cercone00:04:32
As time goes forward, we're only getting worse.
Jason Cercone00:04:34
Hence why we've all gathered on Dave's podcast to vent our frustrations.
Jason Cercone00:04:41
That's one story that I've had, and again, one of many, but absolutely ridiculous.
Jason Cercone00:04:47
When someone reaches out only talking about themself, not offering any real value of what they've heard from your show and what they can bring to your show regarding value, those pitches absolutely miss the mark.
Jason Cercone00:05:00
And podcast hosts and producers that have that trained eye, if they're like me, the second they see that in the first couple lines, they're immediately disqualifying that pitch and moving on to something else or the next pitch.
Jason Cercone00:05:13
Whatever is next in the email queue.
Jason Cercone00:05:14
And I'll throw this in as a caveat, because I'm sure I'm going to get it from this guy very soon.
Jason Cercone00:05:19
Sending me a message that says bumping this up in your inbox, in case you missed it, does not give you priority, nor will it make me think differently about adding you to the show.
Jason Cercone00:05:29
My name is Jason Sircone.
Jason Cercone00:05:30

Jason Cercone00:05:39
Thanks for listening, Jason.
Dave Jackson00:05:41
Thank you so much.
Dave Jackson00:05:42
Yeah, that is a classic.
Dave Jackson00:05:44
Just.
Dave Jackson00:05:45
You got to be kidding me.
Dave Jackson00:05:47
And I actually just heard this that somebody said they got a message that said this is AI reaching out on behalf of so and so.
Dave Jackson00:05:55
And I'm like, look, if you don't have time to write me a note asking to be on my show, I don't have time to read your slop.
Dave Jackson00:06:04
That's just.
Dave Jackson00:06:05
God, really?
Dave Jackson00:06:07
Seriously?
Dave Jackson00:06:08
Yeah.
Dave Jackson00:06:09
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Dave Jackson00:06:11
Because for me, podcast interviews are all about the relationship you're building with someone.
Dave Jackson00:06:17
Yes, we want someone who brings value, but but let's not make that interview the last time you actually talked to someone.
Dave Jackson00:06:24
So if you have a story, of course, go over to pitchapodcast.com story and we'll hear you on a future episode.
